NIC Airport Virtual Environment - Feature Priority Analysis

Survey Overview

Participants were asked to rank 6 potential improvements for the virtual environment from most valuable (1) to least valuable (6):

  1. More complete 3D recreation of spaces
  2. Adding more Historical photos, videos, and documents
  3. More 360° views comparing past/present
  4. More Character interactions and dialogues
  5. More Community stories and memories
  6. More Factual Historical information

Response Analysis:

Methodology

To accommodate both proper rankings and non-conforming responses, we used a pairwise preference analysis:

Preference Matrix

vs. 3D Recreation Historical Photos 360° Views Character Interactions Community Stories Historical Info
3D Recreation 0.500 0.577 0.423 0.692 0.615 0.577
Historical Photos 0.423 0.500 0.538 0.808 0.692 0.731
360° Views 0.577 0.462 0.500 0.654 0.538 0.538
Character Interactions 0.308 0.192 0.346 0.500 0.500 0.423
Community Stories 0.385 0.308 0.462 0.500 0.500 0.462
Historical Info 0.423 0.269 0.462 0.577 0.538 0.500

Reading the matrix: Follow a row item across from left to right. The number in each cell represents the probability a participant would prefer the row item over the column item. A darker color indicates a stronger preference for the row item over the column item. Numbers below 0.5 (lighter shades) indicate a preference for the column item over the row item.

• Percentages represent normalized preference scores from pairwise analysis

• Confidence levels indicate consistency of preferences across respondents

• Analysis based on 13 participant responses with ranking data

• Higher scores (>60%) with high confidence suggest strong consensus

Key Observations

  1. Visual and Spatial Focus: Among the 13 respondents, immediate visual elements (photos, 3D, 360° views) consistently ranked higher than narrative elements, with historical photos showing the highest win rate in pairwise comparisons.
  2. Session Context Impact: The preference for quick-to-digest visual content over narrative elements aligns with the 15-minute session format, where exploration and visual engagement naturally took precedence over longer-form engagement.
  3. Complementary Priorities: The lower ranking of narrative features may reflect the workshop format where storytelling occurred primarily through in-person interaction at the booth rather than within the virtual environment.

Reflections

The results suggest an interesting dynamic between researcher and participant priorities. While researchers value participant narratives and memories, participants showed stronger interest in the unique visual-spatial offerings of the virtual environment. This preference pattern likely reflects both the short session duration and the presence of alternative channels for storytelling during the workshop.

These findings should be interpreted within the specific context of the workshop format. For longer engagement sessions or solo experiences, particularly with visitors who lack personal memories of the space, we might expect different priorities to emerge - especially regarding narrative content and historical documentation.
